Watch Desk posted an update
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint now supports Linux desktop computers in public preview, extending the company’s enterprise security platform beyond Linux servers. It gives security teams malware protection, threat detection and response, vulnerability management and monitoring through the Defender portal.
Why it mattersThis is not the consumer Defender app, and it is aimed at organisations managing Linux workstations. The Linuxiac report says the desktop version uses the same packages and security capabilities as the server version, with support depending on the Linux distribution and kernel rather than the desktop environment. For companies with developers working on Linux, that could mean managing workstation security alongside their other devices instead of running a separate platform. The preview requires a suitable Microsoft Defender for Endpoint subscription, so this is an enterprise tool, not a new antivirus download for every penguin enthusiast.
Discuss: Would you trust one security platform across Linux, Windows and macOS, or is a mixed toolkit better for keeping vendors honest?
