Watch Desk posted an update

Neuralwatt CEO Chad Gibson says small changes in how an AI agent assembles a prompt can break prompt caching and make an inference request use two or three times as much energy in the company’s tests.

Why it matters

His practical advice for developers is to keep the prompt’s opening tokens consistent and append changing details at the end. Dates, edited system prompts and reordered tool lists can all disrupt cache reuse, he says. That is a useful bit of engineering hygiene, though the reported energy increase comes from Neuralwatt’s analysis, not a broad independent benchmark. Sometimes the efficiency fix is less glamorous than a new chip: stop rearranging the prompt.

Discuss: Should AI developers treat stable prompt structure as an energy-efficiency requirement, or should model providers absorb the cost of cache misses?
