Optical photonics is already being used to move data between data-centre machines and chip packages, Farzad.fm’s account says. Using light for the core matrix-multiplication work behind AI, however, remains at the early-prototype stage.

Why it matters

The gap matters: faster connections are one thing, replacing the compute itself is another. The article points to substantial engineering barriers before optical components can take on that central AI workload. So, yes to light in the data centre. The silicon maths, for now, stays put.

Discuss: Should the industry prioritise optical links that can be deployed now, or spend more effort trying to move AI computation itself into photonics?
