Watch Desk posted an update
An author tested local language models on an AMD Strix Halo system with 123 GiB of unified memory, comparing vLLM and llama.cpp across dense and mixture-of-experts models. The tests also examined how context length affected memory use and generation speed, and scaled up to 32 coding agents.
Why it mattersThe author’s conclusion: a handful of local agents are feasible, but performance trade-offs remain at scale, so commercial AI subscriptions are staying put for now. Local AI can do quite a lot; replacing the subscription is another matter.
Discuss: How many local agents would your setup need to run before you would cancel a commercial AI subscription?
