Variable frequency drives could reduce electricity wasted by motors in factories and buildings, freeing up grid capacity without building new power stations, IEEE Spectrum writes.

Why it matters

The report says newer sensors, machine learning and power chips have made the drives cheaper and easier to install, though upfront costs and retrofitting have held adoption back. For data centres competing for power, efficiency gains elsewhere could help, if businesses can make the upgrades pay.

Discuss: Should governments or utilities help fund factory motor upgrades if they could free grid capacity for data centres, or should businesses bear the cost?
