A dedicated AI accelerator can run inference without rendering graphics, but a MakeUseOf analysis argues that desktop buyers may get little for their money. It points to the Hailo-8 PCIe card as a low-power example, while finding that a conventional GPU offers more performance for a similar price.
Why it mattersThe article gives the Hailo-8 up to 208 TOPS and about 20W for an eight-module card. It compares that with an RTX 5060 at 614 TOPS and 145–150W, and says the Hailo card costs around $400. Those figures and the value judgement are MakeUseOf’s, not independent benchmark results. The better fit may be edge devices such as robotics hardware, where a full graphics card is impractical. For a desktop, does the power saving justify a separate accelerator when a GPU can already handle the work?
Discuss: For a desktop AI workload, would lower power justify buying a dedicated accelerator when a GPU offers more stated performance for a similar price?
