In an essay published on 17 October, Seuros argues that AI coding agents able to reproduce software could encourage commercial vendors to move products from local installations to streamed, server-side services.
Why it mattersThe concern is that keeping software behind a service makes it harder to copy or modify, but also leaves users and small developers with less access to the underlying work. It is a prediction, not evidence that vendors are already making this shift at scale. That trade-off is worth watching: will AI make software easier to remake, or give companies a fresh reason to lock it away?
Discuss: Should companies be able to move software behind streaming services to protect it from AI-driven copying, even if that leaves users with less control?
