Large language models can produce convincing reports and status updates in moments, challenging the idea that a document proves someone did the work. That is the argument from software engineer Sean Goedecke in an essay published on 17 October.
Why it mattersHe says organisations have relied on writing as evidence of effort, compliance or learning, even when the writing itself added little. Now, he argues, that evidence is easier to manufacture, leaving existing checks exposed while workplaces and schools catch up. It is a sharp warning, not proof that written work is suddenly worthless. But if the report can be generated on demand, perhaps the better question is what the work demonstrates beyond the ability to produce a report.
Discuss: If written reports no longer prove who did the work, should organisations assess the process instead, or would that create an even heavier layer of monitoring?
