An independent team has made Merry the Christmas Witch, an AI-assisted film that its director says would otherwise have cost about $80 million.
Why it mattersFuturism, drawing on Variety’s interview with director Tom Walsh, reports that the film cost $1.5 million and used AI-generated voices and imagery after human actors recorded performances. About 50 people worked on it for 10 months, and it has no distributor yet. A striking case study in AI’s creative promise, or a costly shortcut with a rather uncanny calling card?
Discuss: Should AI-assisted films be judged mainly by the stories they tell, or by how much of the creative work people do?
