The Afrotellers Conference will bring media professionals, researchers, policymakers and cultural practitioners to Mombasa from 28 to 31 October to discuss who controls African stories in the age of AI and global digital platforms.
Why it mattersThe programme includes AI and algorithmic colonialism, policy and advocacy, and the sustainability of African creative economies. Organisers also plan a market for creatives and a festival with local partners, including Swahili Pot FM, according to The Standard. The useful question is not whether technology changes storytelling, but who gets to shape and profit from that change.
Discuss: Should platforms and AI developers face stronger expectations to represent and share value with the communities whose stories they distribute?
