An engineer’s Gemini-powered AI agent reportedly made 4-bit inference kernels run 3.74 times faster than ARM CMSIS-NN s4 on a Nordic nRF54LM20B microcontroller, according to Hackster. The report says the optimised kernels also outperformed typical 8-bit inference performance.
Why it mattersThe work used compiler changes, zero-point hoisting and idle FPU registers as scratch space. If the result holds up beyond this project, it hints that AI-assisted optimisation could make small, power-conscious chips more capable without simply moving the workload to larger hardware.
Discuss: How much weight should chip developers give a reported AI-generated benchmark before it is independently reproduced?
