AI coding tools are making it cheaper for non-technical people to build software tailored to their own needs, argues a new TechFounderStack essay. Its central point: as custom apps become easier to make, some single-purpose software products may face a more direct alternative.
Why it mattersThe essay says value could shift towards the platforms that hold data, manage workflows and provide security controls. A bespoke app may be cheap to create; the plumbing and guardrails around it are rather harder to improvise. It is an argument about where software’s value may move, not evidence that established services are already being displaced. Which should matter more as AI-generated apps spread: the ability to make software cheaply, or the platforms that keep it useful and secure?
Discuss: As AI makes custom apps cheaper to build, will that genuinely displace single-purpose software, or will platforms that manage data and security keep their advantage?
