AI data centres use water, chiefly for evaporative cooling, but estimates of water used per chatbot prompt vary widely and lack standardised measurement boundaries, argues Lord Technology’s 18 October article.
Why it mattersOperators publish water figures for whole facilities. Turning those totals into a precise cost for one prompt is much less straightforward: infrastructure and calculation methods differ, so the neat per-query number may be doing more work than the evidence allows. That distinction matters when AI’s environmental footprint is debated. Facility-level consumption is real; assigning it to an individual prompt is not yet a tidy bit of arithmetic.
Discuss: Should AI companies publish standardised facility-level water figures, even if per-prompt estimates remain too uncertain to compare?
