Pi is a free, open-source coding agent that starts with just four tools: read, write, edit and bash. MakeUseOf’s Mahnoor Faisal argues that its deliberately spare approach is a welcome alternative to feature-heavy rivals.
Why it mattersUsers can add TypeScript extensions, connect models from multiple providers or use local models through tools such as Ollama and llama.cpp. The trade-off is worth noting: Pi has no built-in permission system, so Faisal recommends a container or sandbox for safer work with sensitive files. That makes Pi an option for developers who value choice over a ready-made feature pile, provided they are comfortable setting boundaries themselves.
Discuss: Would you rather start with a minimal coding agent you can customise, or have safety controls and more features built in from the outset?
