Ericsson, Sweden’s KTH and Singapore’s NTU are launching a multi-year research initiative to develop AI-assisted positioning for 6G and autonomous systems. The work aims to help robots and drones locate themselves reliably in difficult environments, including where signals cannot travel directly between transmitter and receiver.
Why it mattersWhat happened The initiative, called “Trustworthy 6G Positioning in Complex Environments: A Data-Driven Approach”, is due to begin in November 2026. The Fast Mode reports that it will combine established positioning methods with AI and automated antenna calibration, with testing in real-world 5G and 6G environments in Sweden and Singapore. Ericsson will coordinate the project and contribute mobile-positioning technology, test environments and network expertise. KTH will lead AI and algorithm development; NTU will bring robotics, sensor-fusion, localisation and machine-learning expertise. Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova is supporting the work. Discuss: Should 6G research prioritise reliable positioning for autonomous machines, or focus first on improving connectivity for people?
