ICANN is developing a policy that could require registries to examine all domains held by a customer if even one is found to be involved in DNS abuse, The Register reports. The proposal matters to domain owners because a single flagged site could bring their other domains into view too.
Why it mattersThe report links the debate to manga piracy sites that hop between domain names to evade enforcement. A lawyer representing Japanese publishers also argued for better checks on registrants’ physical addresses, saying they could help weed out pirates. The policy is still in development, not a new rule in force. Should a single abusive domain trigger checks across an owner’s portfolio, or is that too broad a net?
