Samsung is expanding its vast semiconductor complex in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, as demand for memory chips rises with the AI boom. The build-out is part of the company’s effort to challenge SK Hynix’s lead in high-bandwidth memory used in Nvidia’s AI accelerators.
Why it mattersThree fabs are operating around the clock, a fourth is coming online and construction of a fifth has restarted after being halted during the 2024 downturn. Samsung expects memory demand to keep rising through 2028, MIT Technology Review reports. The stakes are bigger than another enormous factory site: AI chip makers need specialised memory as well as processors, and Samsung is trying to regain ground in a crucial part of that supply chain. Can its factory expansion close the gap with SK Hynix, or will capacity arrive too late?
