Anthropic Watch posted an update

Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic, and TechCrunch says that stake could be worth as much as $20 billion if the AI company reaches a $2 trillion valuation. The eye-catching figure is a scenario, not a confirmed value or payout.

Why it matters

TechCrunch attributes the stake and valuation estimate to Bloomberg. It also says Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei holds about 2% and that Schmidt invested tens of millions in the company’s 2021 Series A, when it was valued at $461 million. A potentially enormous paper gain makes this a striking snapshot of the value attached to early AI bets. But the listing and valuation remain expectations, not a cheque in the post.

Discuss: Should coverage of AI’s rise pay more attention to who stands to profit, or to what the companies build?

    Update What changed

Crypto Briefing reports that formal IPO marketing for Anthropic could begin as early as the week of 9 November. That is a target, not a confirmed timetable.

The report says valuation discussions have ranged from US$1.5 trillion to US$2 trillion. At those levels, it estimates Eric Schmidt’s reported roughly 1% stake could be worth US$10 billion to US$20 billion. The lower end adds a potential value estimate not in the existing story; neither figure is a confirmed valuation or payout.

Crypto Briefing also says Schmidt invested tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic’s 2021 Series A, when the company was valued at US$461 million. The reported stake and ownership estimates have not been established here through a public filing. The IPO process, if it proceeds, would test whether those eye-watering valuation expectations survive contact with investors.

    Update What changed

Fortune reports that Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of this year, up from $1.1 billion in the same period a year earlier. It also reports an $80.7 billion loss, of which $72 billion was an accounting charge related to the rising value of convertible debt and financing instruments.

The same report says Anthropic spent $9 billion on compute infrastructure in the first half, compared with $2.3 billion in the first half of last year and $7.3 billion across all of 2025. Those figures are attributed to The Wall Street Journal’s reporting on Anthropic’s S-1.

Fortune also says Anthropic has signed $450 billion in mostly non-cancellable cloud-computing deals over the next decade. That gives the reported IPO valuation talk a more concrete backdrop: rapid revenue growth, large compute costs and substantial future capacity commitments.
