Generative AI is making it easier to reverse-engineer games, and Pokémon fans are already using decompiled code to create ports and mash-ups, Kotaku reports. Examples include ports of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pokémon Snap, and HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Why it mattersThe trade-off is less charming: the article cites concerns that some AI-assisted projects produce buggy, low-quality or insecure software, and that creators may not know how to fix it. Faster decompilation could open new doors for tinkering, but a playable demo is not the same as software you should trust.
Discuss: Does AI-assisted decompilation make game preservation and tinkering more accessible, or is the flood of unvetted code too high a price?
