AI can take over small decisions long before anyone hands it the keys. Experts speaking to CBS News warn that growing reliance on AI tools could leave people less practised at thinking through problems themselves, a risk they call “gradual disempowerment”.

Why it matters

Hugging Face AI researcher Margaret Mitchell says people may lose skills if they stop practising them, while researcher Jan Kulveit argues that this need not involve any deliberate scheme by AI systems. Futurism reports their comments and those of other experts; the piece does not establish that this loss of ability is already happening at scale. The useful question is not whether every AI shortcut is a slippery slope. It is which skills people are comfortable letting atrophy, and what happens when the tool gets it wrong.

Discuss: Which tasks should AI take off people’s hands, and which are worth doing ourselves to keep the skill?
