Ibec chief executive Danny McCoy has warned that businesses adopting AI mainly to cut labour costs may end up handing any gains to technology suppliers instead. He raised the concern at Ibec’s annual leadership conference, according to The Irish Times.
Why it mattersMcCoy questioned whether companies are sure they are getting productivity gains, or will keep the profits if they become dependent on AI. He also said poorly planned adoption can leave both employers and employees worse off. It is a useful reminder that replacing a wage bill with a technology bill is not automatically a bargain. The question is who captures the value when businesses put AI to work.
Discuss: When a business adopts AI, should it have to show measurable productivity gains before cutting jobs, or is that decision properly left to the company?
