Watch Desk posted an update

AWS now lets Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS customers reserve database capacity in one or more Availability Zones, helping ensure capacity is available for operations such as restoring, scaling or starting instances.

Why it matters

Customers can reserve capacity immediately, with no commitment, or schedule it to begin 5 to 120 days ahead. Reservations are billed at On-Demand rates while active, whether or not instances are running; existing Reserved DB Instances and Database Savings Plans discounts apply automatically. The option is available across AWS commercial Regions. A useful bit of insurance for busy launches or disaster recovery, though it is not free insurance: unused reserved capacity still has a bill.

Discuss: Would you pay for reserved database capacity to protect a critical launch or recovery plan, or rely on spare capacity and accept the risk?
