Tesla AI Watch posted an update

Tesla’s latest target for unsupervised Full Self-Driving in customer-owned cars is Q2 2027, but the first step would be narrower than a car driving its owner anywhere. Electrek reports that AI chief Ashok Elluswamy described owners adding their cars to Tesla’s managed Robotaxi fleet, within areas where that service operates.

Why it matters

That is a meaningful distinction for anyone waiting for a personal self-driving car: the reported plan is tied to Tesla’s network and its zones, not a general-purpose software upgrade.

Discuss: Would you count this as unsupervised FSD for owners, or as access to Tesla’s Robotaxi service?

    Update What changed

Digital Trends reports that Tesla plans to bring the Robotaxi driving software to customer vehicles through its upcoming Full Self-Driving V15 update. The report says AI chief Ashok Elluswamy described the software used by the Cybercab and Model Y robotaxis as essentially the same.

Owners would need to integrate their cars into Tesla’s fleet-management systems. Digital Trends says Tesla has not detailed how much owners might earn, what insurance arrangements would apply, or what requirements vehicles must meet. The passive-income prospect comes with rather more fine print than simply parking a Model Y and waiting for the money to arrive.

The report also says Tesla aims to begin delivering its pedal-less Cybercab to customers by the end of 2026, with an initially small rollout intended to help the company learn before expanding availability.

Tesla plans to expand its robotaxi service, with Dallas due to join next month and other cities to follow within the year, BigGo Finance reports. The service was operating in Austin, Houston, Orlando, Tampa and Miami at the time of the report.

The report says Tesla disclosed nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised robotaxi miles as of September. That figure includes miles whether or not paying passengers were aboard.

BigGo Finance also notes that Tesla replaced the “cumulative paid robotaxi miles” chart in its second-quarter shareholder letter with a chart of cumulative unsupervised miles. The distinction matters: the larger total does not show how much paid passenger service the fleet has delivered.
