Palantir says neither it nor the US government can remotely switch off Maven, its military AI platform used by NATO, Reuters reports. The company’s assurance comes after Ukraine’s Starlink disruptions sharpened European concerns about dependence on US technology.

Why it matters

That is a specific claim about control of a consequential AI system, not a general promise that Europe can operate independently of US tech. How Maven is governed and what safeguards NATO has are separate questions. The reassurance is worth noting, but the practical test is whether the system’s operators can keep using it if political or commercial relationships change.

Discuss: Should military AI depend on assurances from its supplier, or require stronger guarantees of operational independence?
