Watch Desk posted an update

A test of Windows 11 found that two older ways of finding computers on a local network, LLMNR and NetBIOS, were still active and sending queries. The MakeUseOf writer disabled both and found ordinary network tasks still worked, though a Windows NT 4 file share stopped connecting.

Why it matters

The practical point is compatibility: switching off older protocols may be straightforward on a modern home network, but legacy systems can depend on them. In the writer’s Windows 11 test, LLMNR could be disabled through Group Policy and NetBIOS through the network adapter’s IPv4 settings. That is one machine, not a verdict on every network.

Discuss: Do you still have a legacy device worth keeping, or should old network protocols be switched off by default?
