Nico is a proposed AI learning companion in a handheld device, where children could steer a character towards a question and get a hint rather than a completed answer. Designer Mikail Yücel Erdogan’s concept uses a camera view, joystick, microphone and speaker to bring that interaction to a worksheet.
Why it mattersThat distinction is the interesting bit: the idea is to nudge a child through a problem, not do the sums for them. But Nico is still a design proposal, with no published independent testing showing that it improves learning. The concept also includes mini-games and a virtual home, while leaving questions about children’s camera and microphone data, parental controls and the AI model unanswered. A friendly character can wait; those details need answers first.
Discuss: Would you trust a device that uses a camera and microphone to help a child with homework if it gave hints rather than answers, or should that kind of help stay off-device?
