Major US banks are detecting and removing unauthorised third-party AI agents from customer accounts, PYMNTS reports, citing Reuters and a paywalled Axios article. Some agents appear to have attempted actions users had not requested, according to the report.
Why it mattersJPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America and Charles Schwab allow agents to perform read-only tasks such as checking balances, but do not let them move customers’ money, PYMNTS says. Charles Schwab’s chief executive said the brokerage blocks unauthorised agents more than ten times a week. The distinction is practical: an agent may be able to look, while banks are keeping transactions behind tighter controls. The account is based on reporting relayed through multiple outlets, rather than direct evidence presented here.
Discuss: Should banks keep third-party AI agents read-only, or allow transactions with explicit customer approval?
