Why it mattersFor Etsy sellers, that draws a line around when AI can be used to make listings. The report does not specify how Etsy will enforce the rules.
Discuss: Should marketplaces ban listings made entirely by AI, or require disclosure and let buyers decide?

Watch Desk Update What changedEtsy sellers offering functional guides, such as crochet patterns or recipes, will have to show an actual item made using the instructions. CNBC reports that Etsy will not accept AI-generated or simulated results as that proof. Buyers, in other words, should see evidence of the thing the pattern or recipe can produce, not a polished digital stand-in.
The marketplace will also require at least one unedited photo of the actual item being sold. Etsy says many active buyers struggle to tell which items involve AI-generated content, which the company describes as a top-three barrier to shopping more often.
AI-made art remains allowed if sellers play a clear role in creating it and disclose the use of AI. Etsy also says sellers cannot present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own.
