Barclays plans to cut 5,000 jobs as it brings more AI into its workforce, the Financial Times reports, according to a BBC roundup of today’s newspaper coverage. The bank reportedly says AI is making its staff more productive.
Why it mattersSupport roles are expected to bear the brunt, the roundup says. That makes this more than another vague promise that automation will change work: the reported plan links AI adoption to a specific staffing reduction. The figures and plans are attributed to the FT’s reporting, rather than set out in detail by the BBC. If the report holds, the pressing question is who gets the productivity gains: shareholders, customers, or the people whose jobs are being reshaped?
Discuss: If AI makes bank staff more productive, should the gains go first to workers through fewer cuts, or to customers and shareholders?
