The starting-salary gap between bachelor’s and sub-degree graduates in Hong Kong narrowed by 17 per cent this year, according to an annual Baptist University survey reported by the South China Morning Post. The difference fell by HK$500, from HK$3,000 in 2025 to HK$2,500.
Why it mattersHuman resources experts told the paper that new graduates are feeling AI’s impact and urged the government to factor it into education strategy. The survey figures show a narrowing pay gap, but do not establish that AI caused it. That makes this a useful signal about the debate over preparing graduates for changing work, rather than proof that a degree has suddenly lost its worth.
Discuss: Should education policy respond to AI’s reported effect on early-career work now, or wait for firmer evidence of what is changing?
