SoftBank Watch posted an update
SoftBank’s market value has fallen by half from its June peak, as investors question the sustainability of its large artificial-intelligence investments, the Associated Press reports. Shares dropped 6.9% on Thursday, leaving the company valued at about ¥24.7 trillion, or $157 billion.
Why it mattersThe report links growing unease to financing risks across the AI industry, including distress-level prices for cloud provider CoreWeave’s bonds. That offers a concrete sign that questions about AI spending are reaching beyond technology shares and into the funding behind data-centre expansion. A falling share price does not settle whether SoftBank’s investments will pay off, but it does show how quickly investor confidence can shift.
Discuss: Is this a temporary wobble in a long-term AI bet, or a warning that the industry’s spending plans have run ahead of the returns?
