Partisan actors are using AI platforms to spread misleading material ahead of elections in Brazil, Israel and the US, Semafor reports. Cybersecurity firms have also identified thousands of AI-generated sites posing as local US news outlets, with one firm saying they are aimed at the AI systems voters consult, rather than voters themselves.

Why it matters

The report says experts are concerned that chatbots could sway opinions or suppress turnout, while Brazil and Israel are trying to address deepfakes affecting high-stakes races. Those are reported concerns and responses, not evidence here of a measured effect on voters. The useful shift is that election misinformation may be targeting both people and the AI tools they ask for information.

Discuss: Should election safeguards focus more on misleading content shown directly to voters, or on what chatbots and search tools repeat?
