An AI microdrama about a Tang dynasty calligrapher has drawn more than 100 million views, with related searches topping 200 million, the South China Morning Post reports. The series, Yanbian Qingmei, is helping renew interest in Yan Zhenqing, a calligrapher and politician whose life was caught up in a devastating civil war.
Why it mattersMicrodramas are built for short-video viewing, and this one has given viewers a route into a real historical figure. A small screen, an old story and rather a lot of views: what should cultural institutions learn from that?
Discuss: Should museums and cultural institutions make more use of AI microdramas to bring history to new audiences, or does the format risk flattening the past into bite-sized entertainment?
