Cybercrime damages have not surged in step with predictions of an AI-driven security apocalypse, argues security researcher Joshua Saxe in a 23 October essay. He says the gap reflects practical obstacles facing attackers, from the cost of AI inference to the difficulty of scaling criminal operations.
Why it mattersSaxe’s point is not that future threats cannot grow. It is that a defender-favourable window may remain while adoption and criminal capabilities catch up. That is a useful counterweight to the loudest forecasts, though an absence of a damage surge does not settle what comes next.
Discuss: Should security teams plan around today’s constraints, or spend more effort preparing for threats that have yet to arrive?
