Japan is drafting rules for social media platforms ahead of local elections, including warning labels on harmful images and videos generated by AI. The proposal also targets election fairness and the use of monetisation features.
Why it mattersThe South China Morning Post says platforms would have to screen users of monetisation features and suspend those features if they are used to post content that harms election fairness. Japan’s communications ministry plans to begin public consultation on Saturday before formally adopting the guidelines. The revised law underpinning the guidance takes effect on 1 March 2027 and is expected to apply to the spring’s unified local elections. The draft puts AI-generated political imagery alongside platform accountability, not just content moderation.
Discuss: Should election rules require platforms to label harmful AI imagery, or focus first on who can profit from political content?
