Barclays expects to cut around 5,000 jobs by the end of 2026, with the bank linking the reductions to using AI to improve efficiency, Car Dealer Magazine reports. That is about 5% of its global workforce of roughly 93,000 at the end of 2025.
Why it mattersThe report says 1,000 roles went in the first half of the year, with most cuts in operational and functional jobs. The remaining reductions are expected in the second half. AI may be the headline, but these are reported plans and figures, not a breakdown of which tasks or systems are responsible.
Discuss: When a bank links job cuts to AI-driven efficiency, should it have to show which work the technology actually replaced?
