AI could reshape insurance pricing by letting companies work directly with richer, less structured data, argues Root co-founder and CEO Alex Timm in a Forbes essay. His point is that the companies best prepared to use AI may pull further ahead, while technology could expose the weaknesses of insurers still carrying old systems.
Why it mattersTimm sketches possible inputs including vehicle sensors, cameras and real-time road conditions. These are possibilities, not evidence of a new system in use, but they show why AI in insurance is about more than adding a chatbot. The awkward question is whether more tailored pricing would mean better risk assessment, or simply more ways to sort customers.
Discuss: Should insurers be allowed to use detailed real-time data to set individual prices, or should pricing be limited to factors customers can readily understand and challenge?
