Watch Desk posted an update
Cancer Research UK-funded researchers are using AI to look for earlier signs of breast cancer, including on MRI scans and in mammograms, the BBC reports. The work is part of a broader effort to turn scans and health records into clues that might otherwise be missed.
Why it mattersThe charity says researchers are also creating digital replicas of tumours to investigate how breast cancer begins. Its mammogram database brings together millions of images with information about what happened to the people who had them. These are research efforts, not a promise that a new screening tool is ready for clinics. Still, earlier detection is a practical AI application worth watching, rather than another machine learning demo in search of a job.
Discuss: Should AI screening tools be introduced as soon as they show promise, or only after they demonstrate clear benefits in clinical practice?
