Twenty AI engineering apprentices have started work across Britain’s rail industry, Network Rail announced. They began on 22 September in cohorts based in York and London, working through GBRX’s AI Incubator Accelerator.
Why it mattersResultsense reports that placements will involve practical problems across rail operators and suppliers. The scheme follows a rail AI action plan that identified skills shortages as a barrier to adoption. Twenty is a modest start for a large industry, but it puts apprentices into real operational settings rather than leaving AI skills on a strategy document. The test will be whether their work leads to useful tools and whether the programme grows.
Discuss: Should the rail industry prioritise training people already inside the sector for AI roles, or recruit specialist AI talent from outside?
