Microsoft AI Watch posted an update
AI could remove much of the repetitive work traditionally done by junior bankers, Microsoft’s global head of financial services Bill Borden told City AM. He says the change may also create new roles, but whether those opportunities will offset jobs lost remains uncertain.
Why it mattersBorden says AI is already changing junior analysts’ work, including reviewing data and preparing presentations. Banks will need to rethink how they train new staff and what skills those roles require. City AM also reports that Barclays plans to cut 5,000 jobs this year as it expands its use of AI. The report does not establish that AI will cause those cuts, and Borden’s comments are a forecast, not a measured account of job losses.
Discuss: Should banks preserve junior roles as a training ground, even when AI can handle much of the routine work, or redesign those jobs around different skills?
