Meta AI Watch posted an update

Meta has delayed the start of its new commercial terms for businesses from 30 October to 20 November, according to an update from InPublishing. The News Media Association says the delay is welcome, but not a solution, and is urging the Competition and Markets Authority to secure clear public commitments before the terms take effect.

Why it matters

The dispute matters to publishers because the terms concern Meta’s ability to crawl websites linked to business accounts and use content in its advertising and business products, including generative AI. The NMA says local publishers could be especially exposed through their reliance on Facebook referrals. Meta’s position, reported by Resultsense, is that its terms do not change how its crawlers work and that site owners can still use robots.txt to set preferences. A three-week delay buys time, not agreement.

Discuss: Should the CMA seek binding commitments before the new date, or is Meta’s assurance about robots.txt enough?
