Cardinal Michael Czerny says Catholic theology should address artificial intelligence as part of its wider concern for human dignity and social justice. Speaking at a conference in Frankfurt on 17 October, he urged theologians to engage with the challenges of their time and bring rigorous study together with compassion.

Why it matters

Czerny placed AI within the tradition of Catholic social teaching, which has responded to changing social conditions from the Industrial Revolution onwards. His argument is a theological perspective, not a technical assessment of AI. The point is less about what AI can do than what people should consider as it changes society.

Discuss: Should religious institutions help shape public debate about AI, or leave that work to technologists and policymakers?
