O’Reilly authors propose organising autonomous software agents around four layers: a harness, personalisation, automation and continual learning. Their argument is that agents can take on complex development and operational tasks while people retain oversight, if autonomous execution is paired with rigorous specification and verification.
Why it mattersIt’s a useful blueprint for thinking beyond “add an agent” as a software strategy. But it is a framework, not evidence that the approach has been proven in practice.
Discuss: Which layer should teams get right first: stronger safeguards, tailoring agents to their work, or automating more of the process?
