MIT engineers have built a paper-thin robot that swims and steers using living muscle cells, which respond to flashes of light, ScienceDaily reports.
Why it mattersThe small machine is a curious meeting of robotics and biology. ScienceDaily says the work could point towards biological robots for fragile environments, though that is a possibility, not a capability established by this report. Light as a steering wheel is rather more delicate than adding another motor.
Discuss: Could living-muscle robots become useful tools for exploring fragile places, or are their practical limits likely to outweigh the promise?
