Nasdaq chair and chief executive Adena Friedman is calling for a national strategy to coordinate efforts against financial fraud, including across banks, technology platforms, telecoms, payment networks and law enforcement.
Why it mattersFortune reports that Nasdaq Verafin estimates fraud losses reached $579.4 billion in 2025, with scam-related losses at about $62 billion. Nasdaq’s Greg Williamson said AI is helping criminals scale attacks and personalise scams. The practical concern is that victims can be manipulated into handing over credentials or authorising payments themselves, rather than criminals having to break through a bank’s security. More coordination, Friedman argues, could help intervene before money disappears.
Discuss: Should a national fraud strategy give financial firms and technology platforms broader scope to share information, or would that create too much risk for people’s privacy?
