China’s first fully AI-generated feature film, Sanxingdui: Future Past, opened in cinemas on Friday, with more than 10,000 screenings scheduled. France 24, citing AFP and ticketing platform Maoyan, says advance sales stood at just 80,000 yuan, with takings forecast below 150,000 yuan against a reported production cost of more than 10 million yuan.
Why it mattersThe film’s AI-made actors, voices and backdrops have made it a technical milestone, but novelty has not yet persuaded many people to buy a ticket. The box office is a fairly blunt critic, but it does answer one useful question: will audiences pay to watch a fully AI-generated feature on the big screen?
Discuss: Should cinemas treat a fully AI-generated feature as a genuine filmmaking milestone, or should audiences judge it only by the film they get for their ticket?
