Shigeru Miyamoto says generative AI could make people think harder about what it means to create, rather than simply taking creativity away. The Nintendo designer’s point is that when tools handle technical tasks, more personal design judgement can come to the fore.
Why it mattersMiyamoto distinguishes “creating” from the work of filling in and polishing an idea, while arguing that the work itself can be part of the pleasure. He says there is still plenty for people to do, even as AI evolves. Kotaku reports his remarks from a press conference in Japan, transcribed by Denfaminico Gamer. It is a thoughtful perspective from a veteran game-maker, not a forecast that AI will take over game development.
Discuss: If AI takes over more of the technical work, does that leave creators with more room to make distinctive things, or risk making the work that teaches them how to create disappear?
