US hyperscalers are turning to fuel cells to power AI data centres when grid connections are delayed, Reuters reports. Rystad Energy projects investment in fuel cells for these sites could reach about $30 billion by 2030.
Why it mattersThe shift points to a practical constraint on the AI build-out: securing power can take years, so operators are looking at dedicated on-site generation. That could mean a substantial market for suppliers such as Bloom Energy and FuelCell Energy, though the figure is a forecast, not a tally of confirmed orders.
Discuss: Should AI data centres be allowed to rely on dedicated on-site power to avoid grid delays, or should they wait for grid capacity?
