A new threat model for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) identifies risks including tool poisoning, rug pulls and prompt injection. Its author, Pournasserian, says the danger sits across several trust boundaries, not just in the tools themselves.
Why it mattersThe proposed defences include layering controls around every tool call, separating read operations from writes, and treating tool outputs as data rather than instructions. That gives developers a practical security principle for systems connecting AI agents to external tools: don’t let a tool quietly become the next instruction-giver.
Discuss: Should MCP clients enforce stricter controls on every tool call by default, even if that makes agent workflows less flexible?
