SparkyOS 2026.10 is a new Arch-based system that runs from a USB drive without installing to the computer’s internal disk. Unlike a typical read-only live image, it is a complete installation that can be updated and customised.
Why it mattersThe Register reports that the compressed download is 3.2GB, expanding to a 10GB image. SparkyOS currently requires UEFI, so older machines with legacy BIOS are out, and the image will not work with multiboot tools such as Ventoy. That makes it a handy way to carry a configurable Linux setup between computers, provided you have a suitably large drive and remember that flash storage can wear out.
Discuss: Is a portable, updateable OS worth dedicating a USB drive to, or is a live image still the smarter option?
